Easton, Pennsylvania - The Libertarian Party of Northampton County unanimously endorsed the nomination of self described "successful two-term governor" Gary Johnson, of New Mexico, on December 28th immediately following a Santa Fe, NM press conference during which Johnson officially announced his intention to seek the Libertarian Party’s 2012 Presidential Nomination. This makes the Libertarian Party of Northampton County the first within the Libertarian Party, nationwide, to do so.
Patrick R. Killy, First Vice-Chair of the Libertarian Party of Northampton County, said, “I applaud Johnson's announcement in light of his views on shrinking the federal government while binding it tightly back to the constitution and addressing the reform of our entitlement system by turning over Medicare and Medicaid to the states, seeing them as laboratories of innovation allowing them to find efficient pathways to efficiency as well as finding ‘common-sense cost savings’ for them and Social Security while completely repealing President Obama's landmark healthcare bill.”
The former governor's campaign website says that the number one priority on the issue of spending and the deficit is balancing the federal budget noting, "The U.S. is borrowing or printing more than 40 cents of every dollar the government spends today. The math is simple: Federal spending must be cut not by millions or billions, but by trillions. And it must be done today. It’s time to end excessive spending, bloated stimulus programs, unnecessary farm subsidies, and earmarks; reassess the role of the federal government and identify responsibilities that can be met more efficiently by the private sector."
Killy said, “This quotation resonates with Libertarians across the ideological spectrum, and certainly within the party of Northampton County.”
The campaign website goes on to say, "Government spends too much because it does too much. Unchecked deficits are the single greatest threat to our national security. Unless we take significant steps soon, our federal debt will equal the entire economic production of the United States. We should start by reassessing the role of the federal government,always asking the question: Should the government be doing this in the first place?"
Killy said, “Among the members of the Libertarian Party of Northampton County there were a few differences in opinion with Gary Johnson on certain controversial issues such as foreign policy and ‘pro-life vs. pro-choice’ views. However, all members welcomed Johnson's entry into the race for the Libertarian Party’s Presidential Nomination in light of his being a principled Libertarian whose favorability remains intact in his home state.”
At the Press Conference, Governor Johnson laid out his Libertarian Agenda for America:
-- I want to end deficit spending and cut federal spending by 43%.
-- I want to enact the Fair Tax to stimulate real economic growth and job creation.
-- I want to end the manipulation of our money by the Federal Reserve.
-- I support the Second Amendment and oppose gun control.
-- I oppose expensive foreign wars in places like Libya and Afghanistan where our national interest is not clear.
-- I want to cut the over-regulation of our families, our businesses and our lives.
-- I support a woman’s right to choose.
-- I support marriage equality for gay Americans, as required by the Constitution.
-- I support the legalization of marijuana, which will save us billions and do no harm.
-- I demand a government free of special interest influence, crony capitalism and corruption.
-- I support returning strict adherence to Constitutional principles to our government.

“The Libertarian Party is very lucky to have a successful two-term Governor, principled in his actions, as its potential nominee for President of the United States in 2012. We thought it important to endorse him right after his announcement to show him that many Libertarian Party members and organizations are enthusiastic about his candidacy and have confidence in his ability to promote libertarian principles to Americans eager for an alternative to the two existing, statist, big government political parties. Clearly, the political establishment felt his message presented a clear threat to their business-as-usual approach to governing.”
