It is now legal for Veterans and out of uniform military personnel to salute the flag.

Wow. Thank you. I wasn't aware that as a Veteran the government had any say over what sort of hand gestures I chose to direct at the flag. As a matter of fact I was unaware that I was bound to follow any military regulations at this point. I mean I have been out for three years. After 90 days or something like that all bets were off. (They bound you to certain regs to keep you from assaulting supervisors after you are no longer under contract. I thought there were already laws that covered that too)

I understand the out of uniform military personnel. There was supposedly a regulation against that when I was in. You were supposed to put your hand across your heart instead of saluting when not in uniform. But it was a regulation. Do we really need a law? Couldn't we just tell the services to change the damn regulation? They have to reprint the the crap now anyway.

Just a minor rant. I am sure some people in veteran's groups pushed for this thinking that it was really something they needed to legitimize themselves. Overall I think it was a waste of time and resources. But then again I suppose they could have been voting for more bailouts when this when they were wasting time on this. Maybe it was a good sidebar.

I'm not sure if this is actually a "law" or a "regulation."  I just know that veterans care a LOT about honoring the flag and the country in the "correct" way.  This is basically an official change in what is "correct."  I'm glad they changed it.  People can and will do whatever they want, just like they always did.  Changing the "rules" of decorum for those of us who DO give a crap about decorum is good.

Seems to me like a waste of time to pass this also...I was always under the impression former or retired Military could render a hand salute if they wished to do so already. I mean honestly, if you saluted the flag at a baseball game does anyone with half a brain think that people would stop you or be offended?  Roll Eyes

Marines don't salute out of uniform or without a cover on when in uniform, so it doesn't affect us one bit.
