Bob Barr is no Libertarian, he is a Republican through and through.  And the worst kind !

Someone give me a reason to vote at all this year !

Yeah, I guess the Libertarian Party is going 'Republican Lite' this year. Barr is a social conservative, but I guess votes are more important than principles. So, we'll get 1,000,000 votes this year instead of 500,000 and still lose the election.

I guess my vote is going to a fourth party, this year.

I'm glad to hear someone else is saying this as well!

The only possible positive I can see come of Bob Barr as the Pres nominee is getting a tiny more time in the news.  Even if we hit 1M votes, what will it cost us in the local elections or in the 2010 elections when it's an off-cycle?

Well, I can tell you right now that I refuse to vote for Mr. Barr and what is more is that I am very disappointed that he our nominee. If the Libertarian Party is going to go Republican Lite, then I don't think that the L.P. is the place for me.

Well...  thank God we didn't get stuck with that Democrat who wants a single-payer health care system and carbon taxes.  It was obvious when he left his party that we would get stuck with a candidate based on name recognition.  I'm just glad Barr has more than him.

Maybe if we actually conducted a real primary cycle so people actually got a chance to hear some of the other names, one of them might win.

Well, Mike Gravel would be absolutely intolerable and I would think that selecting him would significantly fracture the party --- if anyone is like me. I won't be grateful, however, that we picked the lesser of two evils. I could do that without a libertarian party.

Have any of you read through: http://www.bobbarr2008.com , yet? What do you find there that is so offensive? Do you automatically think that Bob Barr is a liar? Or do you folks just like to whine and complain here.

Sincerly,
Samantha

Hi Samantha, and welcome!

I can't speak for the rest of the people on the forum, but yes, I have read thru Bob Barr's stand on the issues.  IN a lot of ways, we do see eye to eye, and there are some differences that, although aren't deal breakers, I don't entirely agree with.

My biggest issues are with his past voting history as a US Rep from Georgia.  He introduced "Defense of Marriage Act", voted in favor of the PATRIOT ACT...  He says that he's 'seen the light'.  I don't know if he has for certain or not, so in my mind, he's on probation.  I'll keep watching what he says and does, and if keeps saying the right things over the next 5 months, then I'll vote for him.

For what it is worth, I went to the LP Convention not with the intentions to vote for Barr.   But in the end did.  I could have voted for Ruwart or Kubby, but I saw passion, savy and commitment with Barr.  He is a good communicater.  He listens, even to little old me.

I feel he is commited with us.  I speak to a lot of hard core political types and they are small l's.   They just can't take the leap.  If we get more small l's to take the leap (Barr and Gravel) we can mold them and keep their feet to the fire.  I hope everyone one gets a chance to go to a LP National Convention.  It is an experience like no other.  A few thousand people who want only liberty and nothing else.  I felt that with Barr this time too.  He will be watched, he knows it.  He said over and over that it just took him longer (than the rest of us) to jump ship.

If he does well in GA, wouldn't it be great for him to run for congress and be the 1st LP Member on the house?

Has anyone changed their mind about Barr and his commitment to right his wrongs while staying the course for liberty?

I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I've heard some good things from him on various occasions and I think that we are by far better off with a President Barr than we are with a President McCain or Obama.

Bob Barr has been on the LNC for the past two years, so he has had a chance to rub shoulders with some good folks. It seems his positions had been evolving even before he left the R Party. Everything I heard at the convention makes me think he is a fine Libertarian candidate. I think he can do quite well in Pennsylvania. Media exposure for libertarian ideas never hurts.
