A Compromise for the Libertarian Hawks
by Anthony Gregory

Quote
What to do about the clash over the word "libertarian"? Many who support the war continue to claim the label as their own, denying that their pro-war agenda conflicts with basic libertarian theory, or even suggesting that we antiwar libertarians are the real disgrace to the title.

Some on the pro-war side, however, have had the integrity to stop calling themselves "libertarians." They realize the label does not suit them. Whether contemptuously or politely, they have willingly left the term in its unadulterated form for those of us who oppose the warfare state, and have even tried on a number of alternatives ranging from "neo-libertarian" to "freedomist." They know what they believe in, and they know it’s not libertarianism.

I have to wonder a couple of things.  First, do post of opinion articles on either side of the Iraq war issue really belong under our research committee forum.

Then, I have to wonder how healthy it is for us to keep beating this drum.  The only purpose it seems to serve is to force everyone to take sides.  Then the majority can perhaps shame and cast out the minority.

If we must pursue this exercise, maybe we should at least move it out to the discussion area.

I think a better use of our time would be to focus on our priorities and the upcoming elections.

What steps have we taken to get more people involved with our committees?  What are our strategies and plans for the November election?

Media relations has a lot of openings.  I could list a bunch more.

In fighting is such a waste of time.

Wasn't it John Quincy Adams that said America's heart is with those that seek liberty but it does not go abroad looking for monsters, or something like that?

Wasn't it John Quincy Adams that said America's heart is with those that seek liberty but it does not go abroad looking for monsters, or something like that?

"Wherever the standard of freedom and Independence has been or shall be unfurled, there will her heart, her benedictions and her prayers be.

But she goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy.

She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all.

She is the champion and vindicator only of her own.

She will commend the general cause by the countenance of her voice, and the benignant sympathy of her example.

She well knows that by once enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication, in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy, and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standard of freedom.

The fundamental maxims of her policy would insensibly change from liberty to force....

She might become the dictatress of the world. She would be no longer the ruler of her own spirit....

[America's] glory is not dominion, but liberty. Her march is the march of the mind. She has a spear and a shield: but the motto upon her shield is, Freedom, Independence, Peace. This has been her Declaration: this has been, as far as her necessary intercourse with the rest of mankind would permit, her practice."

John Quincy Adams, July 4, 1821

We've had two factions of the Libertarian Party for decades:  the Rothbard faction and the Randian faction.  There is no love lost between the two.  However, we're united in attempting to increase civil and economic liberty and in attempting to reduce the size and cost of government to a bare minimum.  I do not wish to read the Rothbard faction out of the Party, and I resent it when a Rothbardian wishes to read the Objectivists out of the Party.

As for the term "liberventionist"--this is an oxymoron.  My wing of the Party supports "intervention" when (and only when) America's true long-term national interest and survival are at stake.  Any country that harbors anti-American terrorists is fair game.  A country that merely harbors terrorists (like Northern Ireland) is not fair game.  The promotion of democratic republics around the world can only be a side effect of our government's primary job of protecting our national security.

To cut and run now is not in the long-term national interest of the U.S.  In a year or two, the Iraqis will be able to protect themselves, and the U.S. will then be able to withdraw honorably, with a victory.  To withdraw now would give a victory to evil totalitarians.  This must not be allowed to happen.

Anthony Gregory nailed warmongering Libertarians and Objectivists at the Gold, Freedom, and Peace conference.

Enjoy!
