Title: Statewide Campaign Question
Post by: pagardener on August 22, 2008, 11:24:24 am
Has anyone tried to ascertain/find the 129,246 Republicans that voted for Ron Paul in the GOP primaries? Could be we have some 'closet' Libertarians lurking around who might be willing to help/donate? I was amazed at the % he received. I knew more than a few LPers who came from the GOP way back when.

Actually, I was surprised by how few Ron Paul supporters were actually GOP members. Not that there aren't R supporters of Ron Paul, but a good percentage come from other backgrounds, CP, LP, independent, or some others.

It seems that those who actually believe in individual liberty and limited government have been drifting away from the Rs for quite some time. There are still some left, but they have little influence on the party. I think we would be as successful getting Ds as we would Rs, and I have seen both coming to the LP in increasing numbers over the past year or so.

Those 126,000+ had to be registered Republicans to have voted in the primaries in Pennsylvania. Overall Ron got almost 16% of the vote..some counties were higher.  If there were Libertarians in those counties perhaps they noticed signs (we had a few here in Northampton county but unfortuantely not on anyones lawn). Just thought some grass roots work might help in getting them to vote for Mr. Barr.

There were many people who changed their voter registration specifically for the purpose of voting for Ron Paul, and I think those numbers are reflected in Ron Paul's total. That is the problem with trying to change the system within the "two party" mold, any participation is counted as support for the process. The R's can now claim there is a significant portion of the party representing libertarian ideas, which is not true.

Support of those folks for Barr would be good, and many of them are supporting Barr. Paul himself is waffling between support for Baldwin or Barr. Paul has clearly said he will not support McCain. There are those in the LP who have been to Paul groups and have been promoting Barr, so it does happen. More would be better, but right now having Barr on the Pennsylvania ballot would be nice.

I'm on the Marketing Committee and I think its an excellent idea to identify who those people are that voted for Ron Paul in the PA primary to recruit them to our cause.

I just don't have any idea of how to practically identify them in the voter database.  Many of our activists have been involved in the Ron Paul Meetups and have gotten to know the leaders of the groups and we are networking our efforts with them whenever possible.
