                     Dear John,

  I’ll come right to the point.  I need your help.  You have
been there for me when I needed you, and now I need you more
than ever.  Let me tell you why.

At this moment, I am filled with both excitement and
frustration.

            Excitement because I intend to restore the
honesty and integrity of the State House.

            For us, as Any Town residents, we are especially
excited because I am a local product.  I understand your
values – your Any Town values – we work hard, we take pride
in our work, we care about our families, and everything we
do, we do with integrity.

But I am filled with frustration as well.  It is clear to me
that a negative smear campaign has just begun.

The big government business as usual crowd is trying to
defeat our efforts.

In fact, the attacks have already begun.  We are about to
enter a huge battle – we must win.  I will need your help in
two important ways.

My opponent, John Jones, and the Democrats in the State
House are not focused on what is right for Any State.
Instead they are playing political games.

This is just the beginning.  Soon enough, we will be faced
with battles over very important, real-life issues –
education reform, tax cuts, welfare reform, etc.

My peers and supporters are looking to me to lead this
battle.  They know that I intend to make sure
conservative-minded proposals make it through the State
House… without huge concessions and compromises to the
Democrats and their liberal allies.

But know this:  They will try to damage my credibility… to
assassinate my character… they are going to try to take me
down so that I never make it to the steps of the State
House.

I have fought political battles before and won.  But I didn’
t do it alone… you were there with me.  I am not sure what
they will throw at me now, as we enter this historic battle,
but if you stand with me, once again, we will succeed.

I must ask you to do two things for me today.  First, please
complete the enclosed questionnaire and send it back to me
right away.  It is very important to me to have your advice
and counsel before I face the battles that are ahead of us.

Secondly, I will need to raise $25,833 in the next two weeks
to prepare for what is coming.  Will you help by sending a
contribution of $1,000, $500, $250, $100, $50, $25 or
whatever you can afford to my campaign headquarters?

Like I said above, a negative smear campaign has already
begun.  I must be able to respond to the attacks that will
be hurled against me.  It is a basic principal of political
war and we must be prepared.

Your support will not only help me fend off the attacks, it
will also show everyone that I have the support of good
people like you behind me.  It will help show that I am not
a lone voice in the crowd.
