Report prepared for 07/09/05 LPPA Board Meeting Officers Position Name Phone Email Chair Ron Goodman 717-243-5708 rocket1g@earthlink.net Vice Chair Doug Keegan 717-440-4785 doug_keegan@hotmail.com Treasurer Alan Yottey 717-697-1282 ANYO@aol.com Secretary L.P.P. Board Representative Ron Goodman 717-243-5708 rocket1g@earthlink.net Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month at the Market Cross Pub in Carlisle, PA. Meetings were held on the following dates: 9/20/04, 10/18/04, 11/15/04, 12/06/04 (CALP meeting), 1/17/05, 2/10/05, 3/10/05, 4/14/05, 5/12/05, 6/13/05 Committee Highlights At our June meeting we processed a Membership mailing to over 1,000 past members. Alan Yottey agreed to become our Time Line Manager (An idea from Tim Crowley’s presentation at the state convention) Tony agreed to scan the Carlisle Sentinel newspaper for libertarian leaning letters for follow-up phone calls and mailings from the chair. I’ve identified 78 open offices in Cumberland County up for election this year and put the information into a spreadsheet. Jubilee Day was another success this year. We had a total of 10 volunteers throughout the day and we blanketed the street fair with our “Want Freedom – Vote Libertarian” balloons. Willie Harmon was on fire giving out balloons faster that we could make them. We also generated 26 leads mostly from Cumberland County. A follow-up letter and e-mail were sent to all the leads. Quite a few leads were young people who were familiar with the Worlds Smallest Political Quiz. They had taken the quiz in school and scored in the libertarian quadrant and were very excited to visit our booth. Our goal is to turn these leads into functioning H.S. chapters at Mechanicsburg and Cumberland Valley schools. We gave away around 20 Cato Audio CD’s which is a great outreach tool. They were my old copies that I saved. We also distributed the National Debt information and LPPA Press Release that was very well received. The business cards I ordered from Vistaprint came in handy as well. I called all the current and past LP and LPPA members in Cumberland County that didn’t list their e-mail address. This resulted in some good conversations with people and netted 6 more e-mail addresses. We now have 127 people in Cumberland County on our e-mail distribution list. Spoke to Will Gabig, our State Representative again about supporting our Ballot Access changes. He continues to be supportive of the idea. Had lunch with Doug Keegan who volunteered to be in charge of Advertising and gathering information necessary to run for office. Listed below are the volunteer positions we would like to fill within our county: · Membership Drive · Calling Registered Libs · College and H.S. Doug Keegan agreed to call some registered Libs to try and get their e-mail addresses in the Mechanicsburg area. Zach Williams and David Bile were new participants to our meeting. Zach is going to help market the LP via youth oriented internet sites. Both David and his wife took voter registration forms to change their party registration to Libertarian. 6 outreach letters were sent to people who wrote libertarian leaning LTE’s in the Carlisle Sentinel. I met with Don Burger, Advertising Director at the Sentinel, and he is very willing to help guide us with an advertising campaign. He really likes libertarians and what we are trying to accomplish. Worked with Jim Babb to develop a prototype ad on the pay raise issue. I believe we have 7 people running for local office this fall. 1. Barry Dively Silver Spring Township Auditor 2. Doug Keegan Silver Spring Township Auditor 3. Karen Simons Silver Spring Township Auditor 4. Joe Scinta Judge of Elections 5. John Goddard Inspector of Elections 6. Jay Swartzwelder Inspector of Elections 7. Ron Goodman North Middleton Township Auditor While out gathering signatures I was able to get 5 people to register Libertarian. Researched the process to get a college club started at Dickinson College and I e-mailed registered Libs with a college address. No response yet. I did find out the Dickinson Activity night is Aug. 29th and they are completely booked with tables. Also assisted Erik Viker get started forming a county chapter in Snyder County. We have 6 people running for local office this fall: 1. Barry Dively Silver Spring Township Auditor 2. Doug Keegan Silver Spring Township Auditor 3. Karen Simons Silver Spring Township Auditor 4. Joe Scinta Judge of Elections 5. John Goddard Inspector of Elections 6. Ron Goodman North Middleton Township Auditor We have several “irons in the fire,” as follow: • In conjunction with the Dauphin County Libertarian Party, we prepared and funded several newspaper ads regarding the recent Pennsylvania legislature pay increase, as an outreach tool. Readers were urged to change their voter registration to the Libertarian party. • We have received positive responses and at least 1 new potential active member from our Libertarian Outreach program. • We sent a thank-you letter, along with an LP decal, to 33 members who renewed as a result of the June 13 Renewal Mailer. • Ron Goodman spoke on the Bob Durgin radio show about the Libertarian Party and current issues. Several callers requested additional information. • We are continuing our LTE scanning initiative – contacting authors of libertarian-leaning letters-to-the-editor as an outreach tool. In addition, their contact information will be forwarded to The Cato Institute to be included in the Cato’s Letter distribution. This resulted in another person joining our e-mail list and they are planning to attend our next meeting. • We are planning a mailing to 650 registered Libertarian voters in Cumberland County. We are determining details such as whether to send a post card vs. informative letter with pre-filled membership form. • 36 follow-up phone calls were made to people on the LPPA list from Cumberland County encouraging them to become members of LPPA. • We reserved a table at the Harrisburg Gun Show on August 20 and 21 to distribute Libertarian Party literature and to recruit potential members. Many people were encouraged to change their voter registration to Libertarian. • We are targeting Cumberland County Young Professionals for informal outreach via direct involvement. CCYP is politically active in the community, so it would be beneficial to share additional viewpoints. 20 members of CCYP will be added to the Cato Letter distribution to begin planting seeds of libertarian thought to this influential group. • Ron Goodman had a LTE on Social Security reform published in the Carlisle Sentinel. • We delivered the 8/13/05 Election Reform Legislation to Representative Will Gabig’s office. We have 7 people running for local office this fall with the latest addition being Terry Monn running for Cumberland Valley School Board. At the meeting, we discussed Campaign Finance reporting requirements for these local positions. Quince Eddens is considering a run for State Rep in 2006. Activities for September included the following: • Alan Yottey, John Goddard and Chuck Moulton prepared an electronic “CCLP Timeline” to keep our membership informed about events, deadlines, and goals. They have posted this information on the Internet for convenient access. • We distributed flyers for Michael Badnarik’s U.S. Constitution seminar, which was held locally on September 24. Alan, Quince, Tom and Ron attended from CC. • Also on the 24th, we participated in the Ballot Access rally at the PA State Capitol. • On September 26, “Rock the Capital” was held to protest the PA legislature’s recent self-elected pay raise. Our participation, in conjunction with the Dauphin County Libertarian Party, included a mock Harrisburg Tea Party, distribution of helium balloons, and recruitment efforts. News releases were issued to advertise the event. • We reviewed additional advertising channels, including the Harrisburg Area Community College student newspaper. However, due to perceived low readership, we are exploring other channels (flyer distribution, e.g.) to reach this target audience. • Registered for Pennsboro Pumpkin Festival to be held Oct. 8-9th • Sent Lib Penn to over 500 Registered Libs to boost membership Respectfully submitted by Joe Scinta Secretary - CCLC Title: Cumberland County Report - November '05 Post by: jscinta on November 06, 2005, 02:39:21 pm Cumberland County Libertarian Committee
